Everyone seems to have their own theory about how Sherlock survived that fall at the end of the series. Here's what I think happened.
The first question is how he knew what Moriarty was planning, but Sherlock being Sherlock, it's easy to believe he could have worked it out. And it was Sherlock who suggested they meet on that roof, so once he knew what was coming, he was able to make sure it happened on his terms.
So then we come to the mechanics of how he physically survived, which I think are pretty straightforward. We very briefly saw a shot of a rubbish lorry - he obviously aimed for that, landed on the bin bags (no doubt full of cushions), rolled off onto the road and poured some fake blood on the pavement while John was distracted by that bike that ran into him. Then he just needed a tourniquet on his arm so there wasn't a pulse when John checked.
Obviously it would have taken a massive amount of effort to make it work, but he would have had Mycroft's help, and by extension the government's, so that's not an issue.
So that's what I think happened... except I also think that Steven Moffat and co are far cleverer than me, so in all probability, that's exactly what they want me to think!
Anyone got a different theory?
