Sir Trevor McDonald will quit ITV News at Ten by the end of the year according to the Daily Mail after less than 12 months.
Sir Trevor originally left News at Ten in 2005 after 32 years presenting but was brought out of retirement by ITV in the hope of regaining lost viewers, but since January figures have shown it’s still not as popular as it once was.
ITV News was first shown in July 1967, over the years it’s changed its schedule numerous times but it dropped to an all time low when it was shown at 11.00 o’ clock to allow for ITV movies but Ofcom ordered it be moved to an earlier time slot of 10.30 which it continued to do so until this year.
However the earlier time slot had little effect, the vast majority of viewers had moved over to the BBC and despite massive publicity for News at Ten returning with Trevor McDonald and the iconic bongs of Big Ben, ITV have been unable to pull back the viewers.
Speaking to the Daily Mail Sir Trevor said “all good things must come to an end,” and that it was very possible that he would not be there in the New Year “I am 69 in August and you have got to collect your freedom pass sometime.”
