    Post Dictionary's Are Now Desolate

For a 126 years The Oxford English Dictionary has helped people check spellings and meanings of the English language and now it has been announced it will cease to exist except online, the third edition which has been in the making for the last 21 years will only be available on the internet.

The print dictionary market is just disappearing, it is falling away by tens of per cent a year,' said Nigel Portwood, 44, chief executive of the Oxford University Press (OUP)

Sadly ebooks and wikipedia have taken over the likes of mere books and have left them desolate and thus the OUP have decided it is no longer in their interests to publish another dictionary in print as they believe the printed version only has another 30 years shelf life.

Personally I think this is sad, the internet is a wonderful thing but nothing compares to a good old book on hand when ever needed, who wants to turn their computer on purely to check the definition or correct spelling of a word, though saying that many use the internet on their mobile.

What happens to school pupils who want to check their spellings in their essay while in the class room and they find the word they want is not in the 30 year old dictionary,
Schools may do many computer related topics but sometimes things are purely class room based at a desk where you are required to research and source using books only?

What's your opinion on this, do you agree with the OUP's decision?
